One of my earliest memories is my mom teaching me how to plant something in our tiny little apartment garden - I can’t remember exactly what it was now, probably some zinnias. “Not too deep or the stem will rot, not too shallow or the roots won’t be able to drink up the water.” A lesson in a delicate balance I suppose.
Still trying to apply that life lesson & still planting lots of things too…
Welcome to Milky Way Apothecary! Where I am bringing together a whole lot of interests under one umbrella. Being a gemini makes it really hard for me to do just ONE thing. So I’ll do a little bit of it ALL under the umbrella of the Milky Way. (Can you see where that balance lesson comes into play?!)
Much of my life after high school consisted of devouring everything I could learn about herbal medicine. It started when I took a Herbal Pharmacology course with Margi Flint at North Shore Community College. I was hooked. It was like she spoke a language I knew in my bones - something I had been searching for my whole life up to that point. The truth of the healing potential of plants. Which led me to many herbal conferences, classes, apprenticeships & eventually employment at a couple different apothecaries; Goldthread Apothecary under Will Siff in Florence MA, & Farmacy Herbs under Mary Blue in Providence RI where I learned first hand how special it is to have fresh herbs available, grown right on site to make medicine.
What we do & where..
My time at the apothecaries inspired me to create my own herbal remedies. Not only to make products, but to grow the herbs & make the freshest teas & tinctures available on the North Shore. You literally can taste the difference. Grown on leased land in Essex, or locally wildly harvested - everything is made in small batches, by hand. From starting seed in March, to prepping garden beds, to planting, to harvest, drying & ‘garbling’ - these teas & tinctures are as fresh as they come. And when a tea or tincture sells out for the season, THAT’S IT! It won’t be back until next year, when the plants are in their perfect stage to harvest - whether that be leaf, flower, fruit or root.
Growing cut flowers became a natural extension of the apothecary offerings - I said to myself, ‘since I’m already growing herbs, why not flowers?!’ Bringing those bright colors to the market stand & spreading the infectious joy of flowers has become quite the obsession. And then I learned about dahlias… & literally became addicted. So there’s that in the mix now, too.
